DAVID & GOLIATH - THE CRUSHING OF THE DEVIL’S HEAD

I will put enmity between you and the woman,

and between your offspring and her offspring;

he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15 ESV

The battle between David and Goliath was a practical demonstration of Genesis 3:15 and a preview to the cross of Christ. Israel's history of the battle between God’s people and the Philistines was a vivid illustration of what will happen at Calvary.

The Seed of the woman who is also the Son of David will crush the serpent's head. There’s war between Christ and the devil. Therefore the result of all that is war between the devil and his people against God’s purposes and people.

This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 1 Samuel 17:46 ESV

Goliath and his people are against God’s purposes and His people. The Phillistine champion constantly taunts and humiliates the Israelites as they were trapped in fear (1 Samuel 17:10-11).

When David approached Goliath in that glorious moment of his life. He had a supernatural trust in God that he will overcome his enemy. David was the nation’s representative to deliver them from the terrors of Goliath and the Philistines (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

Amazingly, David used a language that echoed the judgment God placed on the devil “the seed of the woman will crush the serpent head”. Similarly, David made the point that he will cut off Goliaths head (1 Samual 17:46).

Goliath’s scale armour which speaks of their god Dagon was half fish, half man (1 Samuel 17:6). Biblically, it’s an allusion of the serpent in Genesis 3:15. David targeted the head of Goliath and finished him up with his own sword (1 Samuel 17:51).

The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Romans 16:20 ESV

The Seed of the woman is Christ and David acted this truth in Israel’s history (1 Samuel 17). The fearful Israelites found their champion in David. So also, Christians have their true Champion in the Lord Jesus Christ.

At the cross, Jesus defeated Satan to free His people from the schemes of the devil (Colossians 2:15). The final crushing of Satan will soon happen when he is cast into the lake of fire for eternity. David triumphed over Goliath as result the rest of the army joined the fight (1 Samuel 17:52). So also, Christians are to join the battle after their Champion triumphed over Satan.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. Ephesians 6:10-11 ESV

Christians are commanded to fight a spiritual war that requires the whole armour of God. Our Champion who does the crushing gives us specific instructions to engage in spiritual warfare with the enemy. The schemes of the devil are to deceive, destroy and divide the church. Therefore, as we put on the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, and shoes fitted to our feet for the gospel of peace. 

In addition, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. We are to stand and fight but it should be done accordingly. 

The weapon of the spiritual warfare commanded in the New Testament are not mystical or decrees and declarations exercises. Nonetheless, Christians are to resist and stand against deception, temptations, worldliness, false theology and immorality. The armour are permanent which consists of knowing truth, trust and obedience, prayer and the proclamation of the Word of God.

Finally, we stand behind our Champion who has the power as we fight with the weapon He provided for us. Therefore, let’s submit to God and resist the devil and he will flee from us (James 4:7).
