IS JESUS THE ONLY WAY?

I once urged a friend to put his faith in Jesus Christ. His response was common to what I often hear from many other people. He challenged me and said, “What makes you so sure that Jesus is the only Way”? And he went on, to ask me further questions, to make his point. “Is there such a thing as absolute truth”? “Are there not many ways that lead to God”?.

The questions, my friend asked, reflects the doctrine of relativism, and we are living in such times. Relativism is the idea that all things are equal, and that there’s no absolute truth. In reality, the concept of relativism is flawed, but most of all, contradictory. Because, all those who believe in relativism, do not act, or practice it. 

Here’s the truth, all other religions, believe in the exclusivity of their faith. For instance, a Buddhist, believe in the teachings of Buddha, and another person may embrace Mao’s little Red Book. These beliefs affirm their position, and dismiss other faiths, and religions.

Therefore, Jesus Christ, once made a declarative statement, stating that He is the embodiment of absolute truth, and the only way to God, and the giver of eternal life (John 14:6). To the mind that embraces relativism, would therefore find Jesus’s words seriously offensive, and will possibly think that His statement was false or delusional. 

Since, relativism, is baseless, therefore, Christians believe in absolute truth which comes from God inspired Word - the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16). If Jesus, is the only way, truth, and life, then it’s critical that we prove that, this is the truth. 

JESUS IS DIVINE 

Jesus is the only way because, He is unique, in that He is divine. He existed before the creation of the world, and have lived, for eternity past with God. He is not only God, but the agent of creation (John 1:1-5, Colossians 1:15-17).

As the scriptures, testify that God created from nothing, therefore, God has self-existing life (Genesis 1:1-31). Therefore, the only life giver is God, who is also Christ Jesus.

The Son of God authenticated His divine authority with His miraculous powers. He healed the sick, raised the dead, and cast out demons (Matthew 8:1-17). Furthermore, the natural world obeyed His voice, and He majestically walked on the sea (Mark 6:45-52, Mark 4:39).

JESUS IS HUMAN 

One of the greatest mysteries happened when the eternal God, took on human flesh (John 1:14). His sinless life, revealed His absolute qualification, to be the substitute for sinners (John 8:46, 1 Peter 1:19).

The second man or last Adam (Jesus) displayed true humanity to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 15:45, Matthew 4:1-11). Jesus is a sympathetic High Priest, who went through all the struggles, and challenges, of life like His people (Hebrews 4:15).

JESUS’S WORK

The false premise of relativism, rejects absolute truth. However, the Christian Bible, revealed that there is a Holy God who demands absolute obedience to His law, but man is incapable of achieving this, because, of his total depravity (Ecclesiastes 7:20, 1 John 1:8).

The perfect relationship God had with His creatures, was broken when Adam and Eve sinned. The consequence of sin, is eternal death, and separation, from God (Genesis 3:1-19). Therefore, the debt of man’s sin, is infinite, and it’s impossible, for man to solve this dilemma (1 Samuel 2:25, Romans 3:23-24, Romans 6:23).

GOD’S SOLUTION 

Since, the holy God, can only be pleased with a perfect blood sacrifice (Hebrews 9:22). It stands, to reason that the Son of God, who became incarnate, was the only mediator between God, and man (1 Timothy 2:5-6). The other side of the work of Christ, is the imputation of His perfect righteousness on sinners (2 Corinthians 5:21). 

His perfect obedience, and substitutionary sacrifice, satisfies God’s righteous anger, but also grants the gift of righteousness, for sinners to be adopted into the family of God (Romans 5:9, Romans 3:23-24, 1 John 2:2, Romans 8:15-16).

“It is necessary that the self-same Person who is to make this satisfaction for humanity’s sins, be perfect God and perfect man, since He cannot make it unless He be really God, and He ought not to make it unless He be really man”. Anselm of Canterbury ( 1033-1109).

Hence, Jesus is the only way to God because, He is God, and the perfect man that can represent man to God (Hebrews 12:24). It is only the eternal blood of Christ that can cleanse from all unrighteousness (Hebrews 9:14, Ephesians 1:7, 1 John 1:9).

This truth, destroys relativism, and all the religions that are basically works based, or don’t believe in the Biblical Jesus. Ultimately, the resurrection of Jesus Christ confirmed His perfect life and death on the cross (John 20:1-29). Without this miracle, it would have shown that He was false (1 Corinthians 15:12-14). In addition, the resurrection was the evidence of His absolute authority to give eternal life. 

The resurrection of Jesus Christ, was an historical event confirmed by hundreds of eyewitness (1 Corinthians 15:6-8). Scripture revealed this truth and all the Apostles of Christ died for this truth. Secular historians such as Josephus, and others recorded the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

HOW CAN GOD BE KNOWN?

It’s impossible for any human being to know God, except for God to reveal himself to them (John 1:18). Hence, if Jesus is God, then God can only be known through Jesus Christ.

Finally, Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who became a man, to rescue man from sin, and reconcile man to God. He is the revelation of God, who can only save a person. If you don’t know Him, I plead with you, repent and trust in Jesus the only way, and you will be forgiven, and have eternal life.
